Dec 31, 2018#0183;#32;Guwati: The public furore over 15 labourers trapped inside a rathole mine in Meghalayas East Jaintia Hills district since December 13 has sharpened focus on illegal coal mining in the state despite a ban clamped by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2014 which is said to have contributed to the Congress defeat in the recent assembly election.
Though the hugely lucrative coal mining industry has been banned since April 2014, the Government of Meghalaya has given 16 leases to mine limestone reserves in the state. 68 percent of the limestone mined is used by cement industries and the remaining 32 percent by lime manufacturers.
Noting that such activity has created an alarming situation in Meghalaya, the bench chaired by Justice P Jyothimani on April 17 this year directed the chief secretary of Meghalaya and the state director general of police to ensure that rathole mining/illegal mining and illegal transport of the illegally mined coal is stopped forthwith throughout the state.
